Will the use of generic cartridges invalidate my printer warranty?

There is a Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act (1975) which states that the use of remanufactured or refillable cartridges will not affect your printer warranty. However, most printer manufacturers have carefully worded their warranties to exclude cover from the use of any 3rd party consumables. Taking this in mind, remove all 3rd party cartridges before sending in your printer for repair!

Print quality: OEM vs generic print cartridges?

If you are only interested in using black ink then 3rd party (i.e. refilled, remanufactured, refurbished, compatible etc) cartridges can produce results that appear just like the OEM inks. On the other hand, if you are interested in using colored inks for text and images 3rd party inks often produce a slight shift in colouration. 3rd party inks range hugely in quality, in-paper retention and price. If you are interested in creating high quality, high resolution images, for example from photographs, then your best bet is to go with the safe option and buy OEM cartridges and photo quality paper.

Here's a great video that shows an Epson representative giving you some insight into the level of specificity they adopt when refining their printers and ink cartridges year on year. When you see this it becomes obvious that 3rd party inks have a tough time competing for the quality produced by OEM products.

Is there any recompense if my 3rd party cartridge has a failure?

This all depends on who and where you buy your generic ink cartridges from. If you have tampered with the cartridge your self, e.g. such as when refilling it, then generally you won't receive any money back. If you purchase refilled, remanufactured or compatible cartridges from reliable dealers then there is usually some form of guarantee, BUT you need to check the small print. The top 3rd party dealers offer 3 (or more) month guarantees that are unconditional for both the cartridges and printers you use them in. Other less impressive dealers will only guarantee that the cartridges work, not the quality of the print they produce.

Is it possible for me to keep on refilling my ink cartridge for ever?

The majority of cartridges contain a printer head, which through use will eventually wear out. Once the printer head is worn out you will need to purchase another cartridge. The build/ quality of the printer cartridge determines how many times you'll be able to use it. The most basic printer cartridges that don't have a printer head are able to be used many more times than more high-tech cartridges that do have a printer head in conjunction with electronic circuitry. Laser toners with a tank for ink in general tend to be refillable many more times than inkjet cartridges.

Can generic ink cartridges damage my printer?

Generally speaking 3rd party ink cartridges from reliable suppliers wont in any way damage your printer. Due to chemical differences associated with generic cartridges there is indeed the possibility that the printer head can be damaged over time. Quality manufacturers ensure this does not happen. What is important is that you never let a 3rd party ink cartridge get fully emptied. Dried ink on the printer head causes blockages and can be very hard to remove. Simply refilling a cartridge will not get rid of the dried ink.

General handling advice

Try not to remove and install cartridges any more than you have to, since every action results in some form of wear and tear. Never touch the cartridge contact points, as the oil from your skin can permanently ruin them. If for some reason you have touched these contact points the best course of action is to rub them softly with a clean cotton bud lightly wetted with neat alcohol. Lastly, never switch off the printer before it has finished its cycle. This is important since it ensures the cartridge stops in the right place, therefore preventing the printer ink nozzle from drying out.
